In the regular season finale for the Marauders, they fell to Don Bosco at Caven Point 42-7. Before the game the state undefeated champion 1994 Prep Football team was honored, and they were also honored at halftime.
The Marauders were held scoreless in the first half and trailed 21-0 at halftime. Don Bosco scored one touchdown in the first quarter and two in the second quarter. After another Don Bosco touchdown to start the third quarter, the Marauders scored their first touchdown of the game on another Tyler Bell pass to Andres Perez from 3 yards out to make the game 28-7. That would be the only score for Prep in the game, as Don Bosco would score two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to win the game 42-7.
Prep ends the regular season with a 4-5 record, and the Marauders next game will be on either November 15th or 16th. They will find out who they play in the NJSIAA Non-Public A tournament on November 3rd.

On a wild and record setting Friday night at Caven Point, the Marauders beat the Lions of Pope John 58-47. Before the game began, Prep honored their seniors during their annual Senior Day ceremonies.
The game began with the Marauders scoring on the first play from scrimmage. Tyler Bell threw it 75 yards to Andres Perez to take the early 7-0 lead. The rest of the first quarter saw the Lions and Marauders trade touchdowns with one another. Prep’s touchdown featured Ty’ire Clark receiving a 15 yard touchdown from Tyler Bell, along with a successful two-point conversion. At the end of the first quarter, Prep led Pope John 15-13.

The second quarter started with a turnover on downs for the Marauders, and the Lions responded with a touchdown of their own to take the lead 20-15. After a Prep punt and a Pope John touchdown, Tyler Bell and Andres Perez connected with one another once again and scored a 23 yard touchdown. That would be the last score of a high scoring first half, and the Marauders trailed 28-22.
Special teams played a big role in the third quarter. After the Lions scored on their opening drive of the half, the Marauders responded with a 75 yard kick return from Jordan Rodriguez. However, they still trailed 34-29. The next Pope John saw the Lions drive all the way to the 1. However, the Marauders got a stop on the goal line on 4th and goal to end the Lions drive. The Marauders would respond with another Andres Perez touchdown from Tyler Bell, and a successful two-point conversion cut the Lions lead down to three, 40-37.

The fourth quarter started with a Pope John turnover, thanks to a Kyle Wise interception. Prep would take advantage of the turnover with a 26 yard touchdown on a quarterback run from Tyler Bell, and retook the lead 44-40. After the Lions scored another touchdown, Prep responded yet again with a 33 yard touchdown from Tyler Bell to Hunter Watson. The Marauders would recover a surprise onside kick after the touchdown, and Tyler Bell threw it to Christian Cruz from 22 yards out to seal the game for Prep. In addition, Bell's pass to Cruz would be his sixth of the night, setting a school record for most touchdown passes thrown in a game.
Prep improves to 4-4 on the season, and the Marauders next game will be on November 1 where they will host Don Bosco at 7PM at Caven Point.

Prep vs DePaul Catholic Recap

The Marauders traveled to Paterson, New Jersey for the Zone6ix Classic on a Thursday night. Despite the hot start, the Marauders fell to DePaul Catholic 54-21.
The game started out with a fumble on the opening kickoff that was recovered by Prep. The Marauders responded right away as Tyler Bell connected with Andres Perez once again for a 10 yard touchdown. Prep converted the two-point conversion, and led 8-0 early in the first quarter. Unfortunately for Prep, it was the only lead of the night. DePaul went on to score the next 34 points in the first half. Towards the end of the first half Tyler Bell and Andres Perez did connect for another touchtown, this time from 17 yards. However, DePaul responded with a touchdown of their own to end the half and went into halftime up 41-15.
The third quarter featured another Prep touchdown from Tyler Barksdale on a 2 yard run, but the Marauders could not convert the two-point conversion and DePaul still led 41-21. That would be the last score for the Marauders, as DePaul scored the last 13 points and won the game 54-21.
Prep falls to 3-4 on the season, and the Marauders next game will be on October 25 where they will host Pope John XXIII at 7PM at Caven Point.

Prep vs Seton Hall Prep Recap

Picture
The Marauders returned home to Caven Point and picked up their third win of the season with a score of 35-14 over Seton Hall Prep. The Prep defense headlined the game with three forced turnovers, two interceptions and a forced fumble, on a picture perfect Saturday afternoon.

Special teams was the story of the first quarter. The game started with four consecutive punts, and on the fourth punt Ty'ire Clark returned it 52 yards for the first touchdown of the game. The extra point was missed but Prep led 6-0 midway through the first quarter. The next drive had Seton Hall Prep respond with a 50 yard rushing touchdown, and the Pirates took a 7-6 lead. Special teams once again played a role when Prep had a bad snap on a punt where the ball bounced in the end zone, and Seton Hall fell on top of it for their second touchdown of the quarter to extend their lead 14-6.
The second quarter started with a Seton Hall fumble that was recovered by Prep’s Jordan Rodriguez. Prep’s offense responded with a 6 yard touchdown on a quarterback run by Tyler Bell, but the Marauders could not convert on the two-point conversion and trailed 14-12. Punts were once again the story of the second quarter, as neither team scored for the rest of the half and the Marauders trailed by two at halftime.

A momentum swinging play began the third quarter, as Logan Graham had an interception at the Seton Hall goal line and returned it all the way into Seton Hall territory. Prep’s offense would respond to the turnover with back to back touchdown drives. Tyler Bell had two touchdown passes in those drives, one to Andres Perez and the other to Hunter Watson. The Marauders converted on both two point conversions, and took a 28-14 lead into the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter featured another turnover by the Prep defense, as Justin Gonzalez had a 25 yard interception return for the last score of the game.

Prep improves to 3-3 on the season, and the Marauders will have their bye next week. The next game for the Marauders will be on October 17 where they will play DePaul Catholic at 6:30PM at Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson, NJ.

Prep vs St. Joe's Regional Recap

Picture
On a rainy afternoon in Bergen County, the Marauders fell to the Green Knights of St. Joe’s Regional 38-14. Before the game began, there was a pregame ceremony honoring the late Rocco Rodden, a St. Joe’s football player who was tragically killed less than a year ago.

The game started out with a 7-7 tie midway through the first quarter, and the Marauders got on the board thanks to an Andres Perez rushing touchdown from 16 yards out. From that moment on, St. Joe's would have all of the momentum. St. Joe’s closed out the first quarter with a 14-7 lead, and their defense played a major role into the second quarter. St. Joe’s forced four turnovers that quarter, and built up their lead to 28-7 as the game went into halftime.

The third quarter featured a field goal by St. Joe’s to extend their lead 31-7, and the fourth quarter had another St. Joe’s touchdown to widen their lead to 38-7. However, Prep did not give up and played until the very end. The Marauders would get another touchdown late in the fourth quarter on a 20 yard pass from Tyler Bell to Hunter Watson to make the game 38-14, and that would be the last score of the game.

Prep falls to 2-3 on the season, and the Marauders next game will be on October 5 where they will host Seton Hall Prep at 1PM at Caven Point.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: JORGE PORTORREAL ‘17

Picture
Jorge, of Union, N.J., was a three-year varsity letterman at cornerback and receiver and a
member of the 2014 state championship team. He holds the single-season reception record with
58 catches in 2016 and is second on the all-time career list (81). Jorge also started on the basketball team for three years and was captain as a senior.

He continued his success in college, catching 183 passes over five seasons at Lehigh
University and Youngstown State (2021). He was a three-time all-Patriot League honoree and
earned two degrees: a bachelor’s in finance and real estate (Lehigh) and an MBA in leadership
(Youngstown).

Jorge is currently a senior strategy consultant at EY (Ernst & Young) in New York City.

Q: What made you go to Prep?
A: I knew I wanted to go to a private school with a good mix of academics and athletics. In
addition, the camaraderie I felt on my “Freshman for a Day” put the icing on the cake as
well as the motto of “Men for Others.” It was a no-brainer decision for me.

Q: What is your most lasting memory of Prep?
A: There are so many memories that come to mind. The friendships, state championships,
hanging out at lunch in the Commons, and even Prom are great memories. I guess if I
were to choose one, I’d have to go with the State Championship in 2014.

Q: How important was football to your prep experience?
A: The value of football was a lot bigger than the sport itself. Discipline, brotherhood, trust,
camaraderie, work ethic, and respect. Football teaches the understanding of
perseverance and outcomes. It taught me that positive inputs result in positive
outcomes. The Prep coaches taught me how to be a responsible and respectable young
man.

Q: What’s your greatest Prep football memory?
A: Our trip to Ireland in 2016 when we beat Blessed Trinity, a powerhouse from Atlanta. Our
team had some great memories from that trip which we still laugh about now. Most of all,
we handled business. I scored three touchdowns in the first half, it was a great win for
the program, and we showcased our abilities on a national scale.

Also, the day before, our team was able to watch Georgia Tech against Boston College
in Ireland. That was awesome because BC’s running back was Jon Hilliman (Prep ’14),
who dominated in the game. Our senior class played with Jon during our freshman year
at Prep and watching his dreams come to life was eye-opening for us. It sparked energy
in our team for the season.

Q: What are you doing now?
A: I’ve been working at EY since June of 2022. I started as a business strategy analyst and
was promoted to senior strategy consultant this summer.

Q: What is your job like?
A: It's similar to football in a way. I'm in a group of eight consultants, we help our clients
strategize their wealth management capabilities and planning. Just like football, each
team member has a role and needs to play their part.

Q: How has your Prep experience helped you in the real world?
A: It has shaped my experience a lot. Prep taught me how to maneuver in a room of smart-
minded people and how to be positively competitive. I compete every day regardless of
the objective, it could be as simple as beating out a competitor or finishing three bottles
of water before a friend.

Also, the camaraderie at St. Peter's showed me what good leadership looks like and that
carried over to my college experience and now my career in business. It taught me how
to be a leader.

Q: Any additional thoughts?
A: Yes, I want to mention a very impactful person at Prep, Trish Fitzpatrick. Consistently,
she took time to get to know me and gave me a sense of belonging. Over the years, that
relationship has continued to grow, and I am grateful to have her in my life as a role
model and a friend. I continue to use her as an example of how I treat and interact with
others.

2024 Showcase Games Announced

The regular season schedule is set and the Marauders will once again play in several showcase events. This week Zone6ix announced that the Prep vs. Union City game will be the sole headliner on September 6th at Kean University. The game is scheduled for a 7:30pm kickoff and tickets are available here. This will be the first meeting between the Marauders and the Soaring Eagles since the 2018 season. That game was won by Prep 35-7 and was the last Hudson County matchup for the Marauders. Last season, Union City finished with a 10-2 record and won a State Sectional Championship. Saint Peter's has a 10-0 all-time record against Union City HS.

The Marauder's second showcase event will also be promoted by Zone6ix in a rematch vs. DePaul Catholic at Hinchliffe Stadium. The game will also be a single-game event on October 17th at 6:30pm. This unique Thursday night matchup is an extremely rare game slot for Prep football. DePaul won last season's matchup 46-20. The Marauders have a 3-2 record over the Spartans in the last five matchups between the two teams. Tickets are available for purchase here.

June 7on7 Updates

The skill players completed a very successful 7on7 campaign in June. This schedule was by far the most ambitious in terms of travel and overall number of events that we have taken as a program. The players and coaches handled the schedule extremely well. We learned a lot, competed well, and definitely improved throughout the month of June. When all was said and done, the team advanced to the championship game in 3 out of 4 tournaments, won 1 championship, and finished with an overall record of 19-4-1.

Zone6ix 7on7 NJ Tournament

We captured the Zone6ix/NJ Gridiron New Jersey 7on7 Tournament Championship on June 15th. The day was highlighted by a 21-20 win over league rival DePaul. In this game, the team fell behind 20-8 before rallying with a couple of late scores in the final 2 minutes of play to secure the win. The play of the game was made by 2026 WR Hunter Watson in an incredible diving catch in the endzone to tie the game. On the next play 2026 QB Tyler Bell found 2025 WR DJ Brown for the go-ahead conversion.
Syracuse University 7on7

The next trip that the team embarked on was up to Syracuse University on June 21-22nd. For this trip we traveled overnight for the Friday-Saturday 2-day event. On the field, the team finished the first day 3-0-1.

In the elimination playoff bracket on Saturday, we won the first 2 games before falling to CT Prime, a 7on7 team based out of Connecticut, who went on to win the tournament.

Zone6ix 7on7 Showcase

Zone6ix hosted a 2nd 7on7 event on Thursday, June 27th, at Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson. This shorter event (8 team playoff bracket) once again featured some of the best HS 7on7 competition in the state.

The Marauders finished 2-1 on the night losing in the championship. The finals game featured a rematch of the championship from the event on June 15th with DePaul. This matchup in the stadium was also a preview of the regular season matchup between Prep and DePaul which will take place at Hinchliffe on Thursday, October 17th.

Of course the Zone6ix organization did a great job with promotion of the event and provided the 7on7 teams with these slick custom uniforms.
Lehigh University 7on7 & Big Man Challenge

On June 29th we completed our 7on7 tour with a trip to Lehigh University. This was the largest travel group as we entered 2 separate teams into the 7on7 and brought several additional OL/DL for the big man challenge totaling over 45 players in the event.

On the field the teams once again fared well. The "Maroon" team steamrolled through pool play with a 4-0 record. In the playoffs, the Marauders advanced all the way to the championship game once again. In that game, the team fell behind early to Gonzaga (DC) by several scores. A late rally was thwarted when a 2 point conversion to tie fell short with under a minute to play. The team finished 6-1 on the day.

Marauders on a Mission

The team has recently undertaken a strong initiative to give back to the community by participating in several team-based volunteer opportunities throughout the spring. Most recently the team partnered with Senator Angela V. McKnight and her non-profit organization, AngelaCARES, Inc. This organization provides support and advocacy for Senior Citizens and underprivileged families in Hudson County and beyond. In May, the team held a donation drive for toiletries and then distributed them at a community event on May 24th.
The next event that the team supported was the 9th Annual AngelaCARES Senior Citizen Prom held on May 31st, 2024 at Saint Peter's University. This large event was a hit with Senior Citizens in Jersey City and beyond, and all present appreciate the player's interaction and care. Players welcomed the seniors upon arrival, greeted them at check-in, and helped them to their seats for the event.

The next collaboration this spring was with Jersey City's Camp Liberty. The camp is run by a local non-profit called the Educational Arts Team and sits on 5 acres of land just between Prep's campus and Cochrane Stadium in Liberty State Park. The camp hosts close to 400 campers every summer, and for the past 2 years the camp staff has greatly appreciated Prep football players donating their time to ready the camp site for the summer influx! This year players assisted the camp with playground cleanup, weeding, and spreading mulch, as well as setting up tables and benches to construct the lunch area.

Lastly, the team has partnered with the Hoboken Community Center pantry. The facility is located on Washington St. in Hoboken at the site of the old Hoboken-North Hudson YMCA. Players volunteered on several evenings throughout the spring to help organize, package and distribute food at the pantry.
